Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has once again expressed deep sorrow over the continued wave of violence and killings ravaging Benue State, describing the ongoing bloodshed as a “grave indictment” of a nation failing its people.

In a statement released on June 4, 2025, Obi extended his “heartfelt condolences” to the people of Benue, mourning what he called “tragic and senseless killings” that have plagued the state in recent weeks. He noted that the pain and anguish being experienced are not only heartbreaking but reflect the urgent need for action in a country he says is “repeatedly failing its own people.”
“I commented just days ago about the growing wave of violence and bloodshed across our country, particularly in Benue, Kogi, and Plateau States. Sadly, those fears have once again become our tragic reality,” Obi stated.

Amid the worsening security situation, Obi commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oloyede, for relocating to Benue along with Principal Staff Officers, a move he described as a “welcome shift” toward prioritizing security in a region that has endured “far too much bloodshed.”
He expressed hope that the deployment would lead to lasting peace, justice, and safety for the people of Benue, especially the farmers and rural dwellers who have been the most affected.
“The blood of innocent Nigerians cries out for justice,” Obi said. “The security and survival of our people must be the foremost responsibility of any government that claims to be responsible and compassionate.”
Reaffirming his solidarity with victims and affected communities, Obi concluded with a strong message of hope: “A safe Nigeria is POssible.”
