Angry Residents Protest Over Fuel Hike in Benin

Residents in Benin, Edo State, on Monday morning trooped out en masse in protest over the hike in fuel and petroleum products in the country.

They blocked the major roads and set fire to tires to dissuade people from passing through the major roads.

There has been an increase in the price of fuel over the past few months, while some filling stations sell at N270, others sell at N400 and N500 in Lagos, Abia,  Rivers State, Edo State, and other states.

According to a tricycle operator Mr. Chinazo Osondu who spoke to our reporter on Sunday in Umuahia said the price of fuel had affected transportation and every other sector in the country, particularly agricultural produce.

“I just bought fuel for N400 so there’s no way I’ll charge N150 for fares. Most filling stations are selling fuel for N400 and N500. And this has affected every other thing in the country.”

In a flyer captured circulating the city, the protesting youths will lock down the following locations;

Ugbowo – Main Gate

Sapele Road – Limit Junction

Aduwawa – Ramat

Ring road – Fully Locked

GRA Axis – Adesuwa Road

Ugbor – Country Home Road

Ogheghe junction – Sapele Road Bypass

Irhirhi – Edo Street
