Former Governors and a Senator, have been nominated for ambassadorial positions by the federal government. Among the reported nominees are former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, ex-Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and former senator Shehu Sani.
The individuals named for these prestigious posts are currently undergoing security vetting by relevant authorities, with agencies such as the Department of State Services (DSS) leading the background checks.
These appointments come almost a year after the government recalled all ambassadors from their foreign assignments without providing replacements, raising concerns about the country’s diplomatic standing and effectiveness.

Sources familiar with the situation have revealed that the nominees’ credentials have already been forwarded to the security agencies for in-depth evaluations. Although one of the nominees confirmed their inclusion in the list, others have not yet commented publicly.
A government insider, who requested to remain anonymous, explained the delay in announcing the final list of appointees: “The security checks are currently underway with the DSS. Once all nominees are cleared, the official list will be made public. We expect the process to be completed by the end of this month.”
