The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued Public Alert No. 13/2025, warning the public about the circulation of counterfeit Accu-Chek Instant Test Strips in Nigeria.
According to the agency, the falsified product was discovered in Jos, Plateau State, during a routine investigation. The counterfeit test strips were originally manufactured with an expiration date of October 2024, but the labels have been fraudulently altered to reflect a new expiration date of December 2025.
NAFDAC emphasised that Accu-Chek Instant is a trusted blood glucose monitoring system widely used by individuals living with diabetes. The genuine product has a shelf life of 21 months, and any revalidation beyond this period is considered unsafe.

It warned that using these counterfeit strips poses serious health risks, as they may provide inaccurate blood glucose readings. This can lead to improper dosing of insulin or other medications, potentially resulting in life-threatening complications such as hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.
It urges Healthcare professionals, pharmacists, and consumers to be vigilant and avoid purchasing medical products from unverified sources. Any suspected cases of counterfeit or substandard medical products should be reported to the nearest NAFDAC office, via their toll-free number 0800-162-3322, or by email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
The agency continues to investigate the source of the counterfeit strips and has assured the public of its commitment to safeguarding the health of Nigerians.
