Kate Henshaw Slams Age-Shaming Culture, Calls It a “Tired Old Line”

Veteran Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has spoken out strongly against the growing trend of age-shaming, particularly from younger individuals, describing it as a “tired old line” that should be discarded.

In a candid video shared on her social media page on Saturday, Henshaw expressed disappointment in how age is often used as a weapon to insult older people, especially by young men. She stressed that ageing is a privilege that should be celebrated, not mocked.

“It is utterly incredulous and laughable that the first thing out of people’s mouths, especially those who are younger than you, especially the young men, when they want to shame you, is to say, old, this old person, old woman,” she said.

Henshaw questioned the contradiction of people wishing others long life while simultaneously using age as an insult. “Do you people want to die young?” she asked. “Because when you wish people happy birthdays and long life, why do you think that abusing or using the word old will make someone feel less than who they are?”

The actress, known for her fierce confidence and fitness, declared that no one can shame her for her age, calling such attempts laughable and rooted in ignorance. “Ageing is a privilege denied so many,” she said. “The freedom that I have, that many who are my age get from just being themselves… It’s a superpower.”

She also addressed societal expectations around how older people should dress or behave, challenging the notion that age should limit self-expression. “You haven’t been to that age. So why do you think that you can dictate to anyone older than you, how they should appear?” she asked.

Henshaw dismissed the idea of societal standards as outdated and vague. “Who is society? Society is made up of you and me… and people think a few people in the hamlets or in a village can dictate how things should be?”

She firmly declared that “ageism is dead,” urging people to reject shame, be it for age, status, or appearance-and instead embrace who they are. “You so wish [to reach this age],” she added. “But if you keep thinking that you can age-shame, broke-shame, just shame… You will be the one bearing the brunt of the shame at the end of the day.”

Henshaw encouraged fans and followers to stop living for others and start standing in their truth. “Nobody has the manual for life. You keep living your life for people, you’ll be so disappointed,” she said. “Face God. Face yourself. Stand in your truth. Stand in all of your awesomeness, your wholeness, your power.”

She reminded people of individuality and self-worth: “When God created human beings, He didn’t do a WhatsApp group. We’re all individuals. Separate. But awesome all the same.”
