Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed claims circulating on social media that the National Assembly deliberately delayed the amendment of the Electoral Act or rejected the electronic transmission of election results.

In a statement, Akpabio said there was no intentional attempt by the Senate to stall the amendment process, stressing that lawmakers acted to address the “yearnings and aspirations of all Nigerians.”

According to him, the concerns surrounding future elections have already been adequately addressed in the Electoral Act Amendment 2022. He described reports suggesting that the Senate opposed the electronic transmission of results as false and misleading.

Akpabio explained that electronic transmission of election results has always been within the framework of the law, noting that the Senate retained the same electronic transmission provisions that were applied during the 2022 elections.

“Electronic transmission has never been in our hands. What we did was to retain the electronic transmission that was used in 2022,” he said, urging Nigerians not to be misled by misinformation circulating online.

He added that anyone in doubt about the Senate’s position could verify the details by applying to view the final voting records.

Reiterating his commitment to transparent elections, Akpabio emphasised that under his leadership, the Senate has not rejected electronic transmission of results, adding that he personally supports the process as a participant in the next election.

“We retained what was in the previous provision,” he said, reaffirming the Senate’s stance on the issue.
