NCC Unveils New TIRMS Regulation to Combat SIM Fraud
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced plans to introduce a new regulatory framework known as the Telecommunications Identity Risk Management System (TIRMS), aimed at curbing SIM-related fraud and strengthening trust in Nigeria’s digital economy.

Speaking on the initiative, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Aminu Maida, said the TIRMS platform is designed to address the growing incidence of fraud associated with mobile phone numbers across the country’s digital ecosystem.
According to Maida, the system will enhance the ability of telecom operators and regulators to identify, monitor, and mitigate risks associated with SIM usage. He emphasised that the move is part of the commission’s broader efforts to safeguard consumers and ensure the integrity of digital communications in Nigeria.
The introduction of TIRMS comes amid increasing concerns over identity theft, financial scams, and other cybercrimes that exploit vulnerabilities in mobile phone registration and usage.
By implementing stricter identity risk management protocols, the NCC aims to reduce fraudulent activities and improve accountability within the telecommunications sector.
