Obi Questions Silence of Past Protesters at Edwin Clark’s Memorial Lecture

Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has challenged the apparent silence of those who protested against former President Goodluck Jonathan, asking why similar outrage is absent amid Nigeria’s current challenges.

Speaking at the memorial lecture in honor of elder statesman Pa Edwin Clark, Obi remarked: “Where are those who protested against President Jonathan?” His comment drew attention to the contrast in public reaction to national issues under different administrations.

“Today in Nigeria, we must ask ourselves difficult but necessary questions. Are we truly honouring the legacy of great men like Chief E.K. Clark? Or have we turned our backs on the values they stood for: justice, equity, service, and nationhood? People protested when petrol went from 87 naira to 120 naira, now 900 naira, no protests. People protested when 1$ was 180Naira, now 1,500Naira to 1$.”

Obi emphasized the need for consistency in holding leaders accountable, regardless of who is in power. He urged Nigerians to rise above ethnic and political affiliations when demanding good governance and transparency.

The memorial lecture, which brought together prominent political figures including former President Goodluck Jonathan and Yakubu Gowon, was held in Abuja. The memorial lecture also included intellectuals and civil society leaders, serving as a platform for critical reflection on Nigeria’s leadership and national unity.

Obi’s remarks sparked discussions on the role of civic responsibility in the country’s democratic evolution.
