This disconnect can manifest in various ways, from minor inconsistencies to significant moral failings.

One of the primary drivers of hypocrisy is the human tendency to present oneself in a favourable light. People often strive to maintain a positive self-image, which can lead them to justify or rationalise their behaviour, even when it contradicts their professed values. This can be attributed to cognitive dissonance, a psychological discomfort that arises from holding conflicting beliefs or values. To alleviate this discomfort, individuals may engage in self-deception, downplaying the significance of their actions or convincing themselves that their behaviour is justified.

Social pressure is another significant factor that contributes to hypocrisy. The desire to conform to societal norms and expectations can lead individuals to prioritise appearances over authenticity.
