Super Eagles Resolve Pay Dispute After Boycott Ahead of Nigeria-Gabon Playoff
The captain of the Super Eagles, William Troost-Ekong, has confirmed that the pay dispute, which led to a brief player boycott ahead of Nigeria’s crucial playoff clash with Gabon in Morocco, has been resolved.
In a statement posted on social media, Troost-Ekong announced that the team’s “outstanding financials” had been cleared and that the squad was now “united and focused” on representing the country.
“Issue RESOLVED. Outstanding financials cleared and on the ground. Team is UNITED and focused as before on representing NIGERIA with our maximum for the games ahead!” the defender wrote.
The statement comes after reports surfaced that members of the Super Eagles had boycotted training sessions in protest over unpaid bonuses and allowances, raising fears of disruption to Nigeria’s preparation for the playoff match.
Sources close to the team revealed that the standoff lasted for several hours, with senior players insisting on payment of arrears before returning to training. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) reportedly intervened swiftly, holding meetings with team leaders to resolve the impasse and ensure players’ welfare was addressed.
With the payments now settled, the Super Eagles are expected to resume full training ahead of the decisive fixture against Gabon in Morocco on Thursday, November 13, as they continue their push for qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
