The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a sharp rebuke to Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, over his recent statement claiming that 150 million Nigerians now enjoy “adequate electricity” from a generation capacity of 5,500 megawatts.
The union dismissed the assertion as out of touch with reality and “an insult to the intelligence of Nigerians.”
In a strongly worded statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the union described the minister’s remarks as “delusional” and accused him of spreading misinformation.

“This narrative is not only pretentious but a mockery of the millions of Nigerians who still live in perpetual darkness,” the statement read.
The NLC challenged the credibility of the minister’s figures, questioning the existence of the power plants and infrastructure that would be necessary to deliver such widespread coverage.
“If this level of supply truly exists, where are the power plants generating it? Where is the transmission backbone to carry it? Why do our homes remain without power, and why are industries still closing shop due to energy scarcity?” the union asked.
The NLC called on the minister to shift focus from media narratives to actual reform, urging him to deliver tangible improvements instead of “peddling fantasy.”
The statement concluded with a call for transparency and respect: “Nigerians are tired of empty promises. If there’s more power, let it reflect in our daily lives—not just in press briefings.”
