Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has paid a condolence visit to Niger State following the recent catastrophic floods in the Mokwa area, which have claimed over 200 lives, left around 1,000 people missing, and displaced more than 3,000 residents.

Obi, accompanied by Senator Nenadi Usman and Dr. Yunusa Tanko, met with the Deputy Governor of Niger State, His Excellency Yakubu Garba, to assess the situation and discuss the urgent needs of the affected communities.

During the visit, Obi expressed deep sorrow over the scale of devastation and called for a united national response.

“This incident and others happening all over Nigeria affect us all, and as a family, we must come together to care, comfort and stand together, especially in times of grief and difficulty,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State Governor had earlier reached out from the United Kingdom to Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to extend his condolences. Upon arriving in Niger State, he made an initial donation of ₦20 million to support the government’s relief efforts and pledged continued support.

Obi also lauded the state government’s emergency response and the resilience of local communities, urging the Federal Government, humanitarian agencies, and Nigerians of goodwill to rally around the victims to ease their suffering.

“I pray that God comforts the families of those who have lost their loved ones, protects those still missing, and grants healing and strength to everyone affected by this disaster. May Niger State find peace and restoration,” he concluded.
