Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has announced that the Port Harcourt road will be ready for commissioning by May 29, 2025. He commended the contractors, Julius Berger, for their tireless efforts in bringing the project to completion.
The Governor made this statement during a media parley with journalists in a program titled “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Umuahia on Friday. He also assured that the Owaza road in Ukwa West LGA would be flagged off next week.
In his opening remarks, Governor Otti stated that his administration has begun resurfacing and beautifying the Aba-Owerri road, which serves as the main entry point to Aba. He expressed optimism that by the end of the year, visitors would notice significant improvements that would make it feel like entering a new city. He highlighted the ongoing “Light Up Abia” initiative aimed at illuminating different parts of the state.
Governor Otti noted that under his administration, there has been an increase in investor interest and diplomatic visits, with partnerships emerging in agriculture, trade, and industry. He acknowledged that while the state still has progress to make, it is certainly better off than it used to be.
Regarding education, the Governor discussed the introduction of a compensation package for teachers and the implementation of free and compulsory education, which has led to increased interest in the teaching profession and greater student registration. He emphasized the state’s commitment to improving the curriculum through the Abia First Educational Reform to enhance the quality of education for pupils and students.

“We declared a State of Emergency in Education to rescue our schools from deterioration. We have identified 222 schools that need immediate attention. The level of work required in these schools is significant,” he explained.
He added that urgent action was needed when schools are overrun by weeds and snakes, creating unsafe conditions for students. A website was launched for job applicants, which received over 30,000 applications. Plans are underway to qualify more than 9,000 applicants who will undergo a Computer-Based Test (CBT) followed by an oral test, ensuring the recruitment of qualified teachers.
“The goal is to create jobs for qualified Abians and those residing in Abia, and to provide our eager students with capable educators,” he emphasized.
On the issue of power supply, Governor Otti stated that Aba is expected to achieve 20-22 hours of stable electricity with the completion of the new Aba Power substations at Ogbor Hill and Factory Road.
“Aba Power is constructing two substations in Aba, which will guarantee this level of power supply. We aim to achieve stability in electricity provision, and any excess power will be directed to Umuahia. Our conviction is that without reliable power supply, other developments may falter, as many manufacturers rely on power to operate.”
In terms of security, Governor Otti noted that relative peace has been established in the state, although sporadic incidents of violence do occur. He assured that the state is prepared to respond to such challenges.
“Security is our top priority,” he concluded.
