The bill to convert the National Institute of Nigerian Languages (NINLAN) in Aba, Abia State, into the University of Nigerian Languages has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

Sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the proposed legislation aims to establish comprehensive provisions for the management and administration of the institution.

During discussions on the bill, the Deputy Speaker stated that, once enacted, it will upgrade NINLAN to a full-fledged university, allowing it to award degrees in fields such as Early Childhood Education, Business Education, Library and Information Science, Igbo and Community Studies, Igbo Language, Linguistics, and Mass Communication, among others.
“I am confident that, with the support of my esteemed colleagues, this bill will become law, establishing a transformative institution that will benefit not just Abia State but the entire nation,” he remarked.
The bill also seeks to empower the institution to independently manage its own degree programs.
