The Lagos State Government has announced that it will commence full enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics starting July 1, 2025, as part of its environmental sustainability efforts.

The move is aimed at reducing plastic pollution, improving waste management, and safeguarding public health across the state.
Items affected by the ban include plastic straws, disposable cutlery, polythene bags (commonly known as nylon), and other non-biodegradable single-use plastic products.

Officials say the enforcement will follow months of awareness campaigns and stakeholder engagements to ensure a smooth transition for residents and businesses.
The state’s Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has urged citizens, corporate organizations, and vendors to begin adopting eco-friendly alternatives, noting that violators will face penalties in accordance with environmental laws.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier Lagos, calling on the public to cooperate in preserving the environment for future generations.
