Kalu Backs Special Seats Bill, Urges Nationwide Support for Women’s Political Inclusion
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has thrown his full weight behind the Special Seats Bill (HB1349), describing it as a strategic intervention to tackle the underrepresentation of women in Nigerian politics and governance.
Speaking at the Legislative Evening on Women’s Political Representation, held with female legislators from State Assemblies across the country, Kalu emphasised the bill’s importance as a constitutional reform to drive inclusive governance, gender equity, and national development.
“This bill is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic response to a critical national concern,” Kalu stated. “The exclusion of women from leadership continues to cost our nation dearly in untapped potential, stifled innovation, and lost economic opportunity.”
Citing research, he noted that Nigeria could witness a 9% growth in GDP by 2025 with improved participation of women in politics and decision-making roles.
Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, highlighted the committee’s ongoing efforts to promote reforms that reflect national values of inclusion and equity. He called on all Nigerians—policymakers, political leaders, civil society groups, and the electorate to support the proposed amendment.
“This is a crucial moment. Let us engage actively in the ongoing zonal and national public hearings. Together, we can lay the foundation for a more inclusive, innovative, and prosperous Nigeria, where no voice is left behind,” he urged.
The Special Seats Bill seeks to reserve additional legislative seats for women in federal and state legislatures as a temporary measure to bridge Nigeria’s gender representation gap.
Public hearings on the bill are currently ongoing across the country as part of the wider constitutional amendment process.
