Following the killing of a 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade, by Police Operatives on Tuesday, the Oyo State Police Command has said the father of the deceased, Mr. Odunayo Alade, was reportedly driving against traffic (one-way) when enforcement agents flagged him down.

Officers of a joint traffic enforcement operation by the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) attempted to stop a black Honda Accord (Lagos plate FST 639 JJ) but fatally shot the boy during a police chase along the Airport Roundabout in Alakia-Adelubi/Airport Road, Egbeda Local Government Area, at 7:45 a.m. on May 20.
Rather than stop, the driver allegedly sped toward the officers, colliding with two OYTMA vehicles and a Police Buffalo Patrol truck. In response, barricades were set up to halt the vehicle, but the driver reportedly broke through, prompting a police pursuit. Fearing possible criminal activity or a case of abduction, the police escalated their response.

During the chase, a police corporal attempted to shoot the vehicle’s tyres to stop it. However, the bullet tragically struck Kehinde Alade, who was seated behind the driver. He was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival. His body has been deposited at Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
The incident triggered immediate security deployments across Ibadan by the Commissioner of Police, CP Johnson Adenola, to prevent unrest. Calm was restored swiftly, and normalcy resumed in the affected areas.
CP Adenola has ordered a full investigation, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department. The officer who discharged the fatal shot has been taken into custody and is cooperating with investigators.
The Command has extended its condolences to the bereaved family and promised a transparent investigation. Further updates are expected as the inquiry progresses.
Residents can contact the Oyo State Police via the emergency number 615 or the Command Control Room on 08081768614, 09054133071, or 09061299291.
